What it costs to start

You need four things: rules, models, a way to paint them, and a table with some terrain. Here's how to keep each one under control.

The four costs

  1. Rules

Some boxed starter games include rules; army boxes usually need the rulebook bought separately. Check what's in the box before you buy.

  2. Models

A starter army or a two-player box is the cheapest way in. Buy one force, play a few games, then expand.

  3. Paint and tools

A small set of basic colours, a wash, two brushes, clippers and glue covers most beginners.

  4. Table and terrain

A kitchen table and home-made terrain are fine. Clubs and stores often supply tables and terrain.
